With hundreds of features, restaurant reviews, columns etc. in the last few years, Alex is a knowledgeable and influential food writer/blogger based in Waterloo, ON. He has interviewed leading chefs including Davy Tissot, Susur Lee, Jason Bangerter, John Placko, Camilla Wynne, Michael Smith, Zane Kaplansky, Matt Kershaw, and Jonathan Gushue. The longest-serving restaurant reviewer for the Waterloo Region Record (2015-2023), he has authored various pieces as a Contributing Writer and Photographer, for Grand Magazine in Waterloo Region. As Food and Drink Editor, he helped shape the content of B City Magazine from its relaunch in early 2014 until early 2016, and was a regular, featured contributor to the National Post's Gastropost (online and print) for five years including being part of Gastropost's "Advance Inspiration Team." Alex also authored over 100 “Food for Thought” columns in “The Hamiltonian” between 2012 and 2018. Covering a gamut of food, wine and travel issues, his thought-provoking words, recipes, restaurant reviews and award-winning photos have also appeared in “Hamilton Magazine”, “Wine Food and Friends”, Rare Republic (as Contributing Editor), “Food and Wine”, the “Hamilton Spectator”, Dailyhive.com/Toronto, the “Moncton Times & Transcript” and “The Atlantic Salmon Journal” among others. Alex is known for thoughtful, candid reviews, breaking stories, in-depth, well-researched writing and event coverage, and insightful, easy-reading profiles of top chefs and other personalities, as well as restaurants and wineries. He has also written extensively over the past 35 years, in a variety of leading magazines and other venues, on a variety of topics including environmental conservation, fly-fishing, water, and recipes. He co-founded a men's cooking group, raising funds for culinary student scholarships, has served many boards over the years, including the Canadian Science Writers' Association, and has also volunteered as a judge for various food “fests” and events: including Top Chef Waterloo Region 2022. Alex also volunteered several years as lead judge for what is likely the largest single day food event in Ontario, Hamilton’s Living Rock SoupFest, with over 7,000 in attendance. He's also been an invited speaker by a number of organisations. Prior to writing about food Alex had a very successful career as a scientist, science manager and communicator, linking science to policy: For details - including examples of some of the projects he led - see his LinkedIn profile https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexbielak .
