  • Outer-layer universality of the mean velocity profile in turbulent wall-bounded flows

By Sergio Pirozzoli, Alexander Smits Verified, Aerospace Engineering| Physical Review B@ Abstract We derive objective criteria to discern universality of the outer-layer mean velocity profile in wall-bounded flows, which yield a set of outer velocity and length scales. The new scaling generalizes the Rotta-Clauser scaling and includes the Zagarola-Smits scaling as a special case for internal flows, and it supports the friction velocity as the most plausible velocity scale in the asymptotic high-Reynolds-number regime.

  • Identification and analysis of very-large-scale turbulent motions using multiscale proper orthogonal decomposition

By Dominique Thévenin, Alexander Smits Verified, Aerospace Engineering, Steve Wolligandt| Physical Review B@ Abstract To identify and characterize very-large-scale motions (VLSM) in turbulent channel flows, direct numerical simulations are performed at Reτ=906 and 3216. The turbulence structure is then analyzed by proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and multiscale POD (mPOD). Unlike POD, mPOD is able to distinguish the most energetic modes at selected scales (or frequencies) by imposing spectral cutoffs to separate VLSM, large-scale motions (LSM), and small-scale motions.
