Alice Morrison is an adventurer, TV presenter and author, currently based in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. She is an established journalist and speaker. A Scot, she was brought up partially in Africa and went on to study Arabic and Turkish. After a career at the BBC TV in national and international news, she became CEO of Vision and Media, tasked with developing the creative industries in the Northwest of England. Then, in mid-life she changed course. Her big adventures began when she cycled 12,000 kms from Cairo to Cape Town on the Tour D’Afrique, the longest bike race on earth, coming 3rd woman. She swapped the rat race for a bike race and has not looked back. In 2016, she travelled from Tangier to Timbuktu for her BBC2 series, Morocco to Timbuktu: An Arabian Adventure, following the ancient salt routes to the fabled city. Her latest accomplishment has been to become the first woman to walk the length of the Draa Valley in Morocco in Jan-March 2019: 1,500 kms with 3 Amazigh guides and 5 camels. She investigated the effects of climate change on the peoples and environment of the south, discovered a lost city, and learned how to tar a camel’s bottom. Other adventures include taking on the notorious Marathon des Sables, running round Everest and achieving a world first – the Atlas to Atlantic. Her latest book, My 1001 Nights, with Simon and Schuster was published in April 2019 and she is also the author of Dodging Elephants and Morocco to Timbuktu. She is a prolific journalist. She is an accomplished public speaker, with two TEDx talks and numerous corporate and adventure clients. “If I can do it, anyone can!” is her mantra and she shares her experiences with lightness and humour overlaying the more serious themes. By Alice Morrison| The i Paper Verified This will be easy, I thought, as I downloaded the West Highland Way map – only 96 miles. The ups didn’t look too bad and there were plenty of water sources. I then doubled down on the jinx with a bit of pride-before-a-fall. I’ve walked across entire countries. I’ve walked across the Sahara, and around landmines. I think of myself as a bit of an Indiana Jones for girls. But five days later when I took off my boots after 13 hours of solid rain, I felt more like Bridget Jones.

I was footsore and emotional as we joined the worshippers flocking to Friday prayer in the Prophet’s Mosque. What an experience. This first 930km stage of my bid to become the first recorded person to cross Saudi Arabia on foot north to south has exceeded all my expectations.
