Benga, previously known as Mbye Otabenga, was brought from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the United States in 1904 by former Presbyterian missionary Samuel Verner to be displayed at the St. Louis World’s Fair. Two years later, he was exhibited with an orangutan at the Bronx Zoo in New York, Mayor Joan Foster said.
