By Allison Gutleber Verified| KVAL-TV (Eugene, OR) Verified PORTLAND, Ore. — The National Weather Service has cut multiple weather balloon launches in some states due to staffing shortages, however, so far the Pacific Northwest has been largely unaffected. The balloons collect upper air observations which are crucial for forecasting. There are 100 weather balloon launching sites throughout the United States, Caribbean, and the Pacific Basin. Each site launches 2 weather balloons a day; one in the morning and one at night.
