Biography

I am an independent journalist who covers small business, entrepreneurship, museum finance and more for The New York Times, Fortune, ARTnews and other publications. I am also an editor-in-residence at Michigan State University, where I teach feature writing, business of media, and creativity and entrepreneurship. My book, “Detroit Hustle," a memoir of moving from Brooklyn to Detroit, came out in 2016. I always have at least one novel started, and am the founder of the Shady Ladies Literary Society, which curates conversations with unforgettable women writers, artists and scientists. I am a former Knight-Wallace Fellow, class of ’13, and before that I was an editor at CNNMoney, Fortune Small Business and other publications. I also have a background in alternative weeklies and investigative reporting. My career has taken many turns, but my guiding principle is this: Go where you can make a difference, whether it is guiding military families in preparing their finances for deployment or uncovering corruption in city government. In doing so, my teams have won the IRE, Loeb, John Bartlow Martin, Livingston and many more awards. I decomplicate tough topics. I write. I edit. I do teevee and radio. I CMS like a madwoman. I especially SEO. Also: I love pitbulls and cowboy boots. I live in Detroit with my husband and a country band of critters: Hank Williams, June Carter Cat and Willie Nelson.
