Biography

At this point it's clear that I will never decide what I want to be when I grow up. But I won a Lisagor award this year for a four-part series about a homeless man, and I hope to do a great deal more writing for a variety of publications. After finishing college long ago at the University of Chicago, I followed my father's path and went to work as a full-time journalist. I began at the Hyde Park Herald, moved to the Daily Southtown and then into media-relations jobs for the City of Chicago and State of Illinois. Didn't like the government work, though I learned a lot from it. After about 15 years in communications, I took a long hiatus to pursue music, mostly classical. I sang in professional ensembles, took jobs as a concert soloist, and began to teach musical skills and vocal technique one-on-one – at first only to singers, but then expanding to actors, teachers and public speakers. I expect to teach until I die. A few years ago I decided I couldn't Not do journalism anymore, and circled back as a freelancer to my first F/T employer, the Herald.

By Andrea Holliday| Hyde Park Herald Verified Offshoot of Governor JB Pritzker’s 2021 effort to “begin the transformation of our health care system,” a new senior health center came to bloom in July at St. Bernard Hospital in east Englewood. What fruit it bears will depend in part on the relationship it builds with the communities it aspires to serve, among them Woodlawn, Washington Park, Grand Crossing and South Shore. The Center for Better Aging (CBA) is now two months into operations in a spiffed-up St. Bernard Outpatient Center at 6307 S.

  • In the Cathedral of Sculpture: The Last Days and Years of Richard Hunt

By Andrea Holliday| Newcity Art@ For a long time, it seemed like he could last forever. His wiry body was as strong as the metals that he spent his life welding, casting, cutting, shaping, bending to his will. His friends felt that strength every time he hugged them; that sturdy embrace was his standard greeting. He radiated warmth. Richard Howard Hunt, who passed away in December at eighty-eight, was the greatest sculptor ever born in Chicago.
