By Anh Gray| The Nevada Independent Verified The clear blue sky on the morning of September 11, 2001 did not portend the day ahead. I pulled on a t-shirt and denim skirt in my postage-stamp-sized dorm on the Upper West Side in New York City, where I was attending graduate school. I was planning to hop on the subway to John F. Kennedy International Airport. Newly engaged to a Canadian I fell in love with in the city, I wanted to surprise the person who's now my husband at the airport.

Report For America
Report for America is a nonprofit initiative dedicated to revitalizing local journalism in the United States. Operated under The GroundTruth Project, it addresses the decline in local news coverage by placing journalists in underserved communities to report on important issues. The organization aims to strengthen communities and democracy through truthful and fair reporting. The program recruits and places emerging journalists in local newsrooms, covering topics such as healthcare, education, racial justice, and government accountability. It provides ongoing training, mentorship, and resources to support these journalists, including fundraising training to help secure community backing. Report for America also partners with newsrooms to develop sustainable funding strategies, ensuring long-term viability for local journalism. With a mission to place 2,500 journalists in over 750 newsrooms, Report for America is working to eliminate "news deserts" and enhance accountability reporting. The organization currently supports 59 journalists across 50 newsrooms and is focused on expanding its impact.
