Cosi Carnegie’s background is in ancient history, classics, and archaeology and she’s passionate about sharing ancient history in an informative and accessible way. So I was delighted when she invited me, and to talk about our research and writing as part of a celebration of women in history.

When autism was first defined by Leo Kanner in the 1940s it was considered to be a rare phenomenon. In the early 1980s it was estimated to afflict 5.5 people per 100,000. By 1995 incidence had grown to 44.9 per 100,000, by 2006 it had climbed to one in 110 children, and fifteen years later to one in forty-four.
