By Annemarie Cuccia Verified| Street Sense Media@ I was thrilled to join street paper colleagues from around the world at the International Network for Street Papers (INSP) summit this September. If you’re not familiar with INSP, Street Sense is part of a global network dedicated to reporting on homelessness and poverty and empowering people experiencing homelessness through employment and art, and INSP brings that network together — sort of like the Associated Press for street papers.
By Annemarie Cuccia Verified| Street Sense Media@ Homeless shelters for individuals in D.C. were full or nearly full for much of April, according to shelter monitoring reports, leaving people with few options but to sleep outside. To respond to the demand, D.C. opened 80 additional shelter beds in May: 40 for women at Eve’s Place, and 40 for men at Emery. On May 29, the most recent night for which data is available, 40 men and 33 women slept in the extra beds, which will stay open through the summer.
By Annemarie Cuccia Verified| Street Sense Media@ Michael Broughton, equipped with Visa gift cards and a bright blue beanie, set out from the First Congregational United Church of Christ around 9 p.m. on Jan. 24. A D.C. Pathways to Housing program manager, Broughton was leading a team of volunteers to survey people sleeping outside in downtown D.C. for the annual Point-in-Time (PIT) Count. One of the first people Broughton surveyed was Vernon, whom he met standing beneath the awning of the 13th Street entrance to the Metro Center station.
Company Info
Street Sense Media
Street Sense Media creates content in print, film, theater, photography, audio, illustration, and more, all for the purpose of providing economic opportunity for and elevating the voices of people experiencing homelessness. The content of our media center aims to challenge perceptions of homelessness and those it affects while creating common ground upon which to build a stronger community. Our innovative approach harnesses the abilities, aspirations and hard work of men and women experiencing homelessness. We have long known that while housing and economic opportunity are distributed unevenly, talent and creativity are distributed equally, without regard to income or housing status.
