My career took off in 1992 when I secured a one-on-one interview with the greatest NBA player of all time, Michael Jordan. I went on to produce prep sports stories for ESPN and produce the popular financial news program, The Color of Money, for PBS/BET. I won a handful of EMMY Awards while employed by Detroit's PBS affiliate. Later in my career, I created marketing videos for clients such as Toyota Motors, The Dermatology Foundation, Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit, The City of Detroit, Ford Motor Company, and many others. Major daily news outlets and other news organizations have published my work. I am also the host of The Open Source Podcast with Tony Mottley; Open Source focuses creativity and business and marketing strategy.

With his flowing hair, scruffy beard and mustache, the slender, six-foot-one Groat looks more like a model than a star athlete–but looks can be deceiving. Groat has scored points in bunches for the 2017-2018 UM-Dearborn men’s hockey team, averaging more than a goal per game. Groat knew that he had a knack for scoring goals while a junior at Wyandotte High School.

Blake Bonkowski, who is the Coordinator for LGBTQ+ and Inclusion Initiatives UM-Dearborn, says the issue is not getting the attention it deserves. “If you just look at hate crimes against LGBT people, the vast majority of those are against trans women of color. On average, between 20-30 trans women of color are murdered every year.” Bonkowski said.
