Avadhesh Akodia is a renowned investigative journalist in India, known for his fearless pursuit of truth. With over two decades of experience, he has exposed high-profile cases, earning a reputation as one of the country’s most courageous reporters. In 2024, he made history as the first Indian journalist to conduct cross-border investigations, uncovering a massive organ trafficking racket operating between India and Bangladesh. Akodia's investigation revealed a shocking network of brokers, doctors, and officials exploiting impoverished Bangladeshis, buying kidneys for ₹2-3 lakh and selling them in India for ₹25-30 lakh. Over several months, he traveled 1,500 km across eight districts in Bangladesh, posing as a private hospital representative. He met 30 kidney donors and recipients, documenting the trafficking network’s operations through undercover interviews and negotiations. His exposé triggered swift action in India. Authorities launched a formal probe, leading to the arrest of 15 individuals, including medical professionals. Fortis Hospital’s license for organ transplants was revoked, and the Government Medical College’s transplant authorization committee was restructured. The federal health ministry introduced a nationwide tracking system for organ transplants to curb illegal trade, while the Enforcement Directorate (ED) began investigating the financial aspects of the racket. The investigation came with immense personal risk. Entering Bangladesh on a tourist visa without local support, Akodia posed as a hospital consultant, a marketing head, and even a transplant patient’s relative to infiltrate the network. Discovery of his true identity could have led to arrest. In India, accessing transplant records proved challenging due to institutional complicity. With help from the Anti-Corruption Bureau and a local Bengali-Hindi-speaking driver, he overcame these obstacles. Akodia’s revelations sparked national and global conversations on organ trafficking ethics. His work led to legal reforms and stricter oversight, with authorities now more committed to dismantling the illegal trade. Though the fight continues, his courageous reporting has been a catalyst for change.
