Biography

Ayuba Iliya is Multimedia Journalist with over a decade of experience dedicated to development journalism. He is passionate about amplifying the voices of underserved communities and uncovering stories that drive social impact. Currently a Journalist with the BBC World Service, Ayuba is part of the editorial team behind Focus on Africa, BBC News flagship program. Before joining Focus on Africa he was with Gist Nigeria — BBC News co-production with Channels Television, delivering in-depth reporting and analysis focusing on youth, women, and other marginalized groups in Nigeria. In 2023, he was named one of the 100 Most Impactful Young Nigerians by World Entourage Magazine and honoured with the Media Trust Excellence Award for outstanding journalistic performance. Before joining the BBC, Ayuba served as Foreign Desk Editor at Media Trust Group (owners of Daily Trust, Trust TV, Trust Radio, and Aminiya), where he launched Africa Update — a weekly show examining Africa’s role in global affairs and reaching audiences in over 40 African countries. A seasoned broadcaster, he co-anchored Daybreak, Trust TV’s flagship morning show, engaging thought leaders, analysts, and policymakers on critical national issues. His storytelling craft shines in documentaries and reports on sociopolitical and economic issues — including a notable piece on Nigeria’s struggling textile industry. Earlier in his career, Ayuba was a Senior Producer and Presenter at Nigeria Customs Broadcasting Network (NCBN) and a Security Correspondent at Viewer Television Network, covering defence operations across Nigeria’s armed forces. In 2019, he was among the few journalists embedded in Nigerian military operations to document counter-terrorism efforts in areas reclaimed from Boko Haram. He also played a pioneering role at TStv Africa, working as a News Producer and managing daily bulletins for its in-house channels. At Business Post Media, he covered the Nigerian Parliament and political parties as a Political Correspondent. Ayuba holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from the University of Maiduguri and is currently a master’s degree student of Mass communication at the University of Lagos.
