Throughout the campaign, the endless – and utterly baseless – claims of immigrants invading the country “from prisons and jails, insane asylums and mental institutions” caused me to ponder the past. In particular, I thought about the Red Scare. America was gripped by the fear of communism in the first half of the 20th century, thanks to Joseph Stalin’s alarming rise to power.
