Biography

I am a storyteller, scholar, and woodsman, who was reared in the Midwestern prairies of Illinois but grew up in the Rocky Mountains of Montana. I worked for over a decade and a half on backcountry trail crews in California's Trinity-Alps Wilderness, Glacier National Park, Big Bend National Park, Bob Marshall Wilderness, stationed as a fire lookout (one season in the Bob Marshall and one season in Glacier), helped with soil surveys for NRCS in Glacier National Park, helped on numerous wildlife studies in Glacier National Park (fishers, harlequin ducks, lynx, mountain goats, northern hawk owls, and wolverines, etc), and was a presence at a remote ranger station in Glacier National Park for a decade during hunting season to keep an eye out for poachers, before beginning his writing career. My work has appeared in Popular Science, Yahoo News UK, Field & Stream, Esquire, Sierra, Bugle, Canoe & Kayak, Mountain, Appalachia Journal, Flathead Beacon, Mountain Life Annual (COVID delay 2021), Sisyphus, Lake Superior Magazine, Earth Island Journal, Whitefish Review, Written River, Literary Orphans, Black Heart, Flathead Living, The Avocet, Communique, Montana Headwall, GoLocal Flathead Valley, Medium, and in other publications. I am the Senior Editor of the Whitefish Review. I also helped with a podcast called www.reststopradio.org. I have done branded storytelling content writing for Filson, the Nancy Cawdrey Studio and Gallery (specifically the Forever Glacier Project), and Hipcamp. Also, I did SEO for the latter. I have a master's degree in Environmental Science and Natural Resource Journalism from the University of Montana. During this time in grad school, I earned an "Outstanding Graduate Career Award." My undergraduate degree was in cultural anthropology with a minor in wilderness studies. I am currently writing a book and looking for a publishing house. Ten of the chapters have been published. My website is www.benjaminpolley.com/stories
