Biography
Bill Birnbauer was a journalist at The Age and The Sunday Age newspapers in Melbourne, Australia, for 33 years. During this time, he was the newspaper's chief of staff, news editor and night editor and worked for periods as an investigative journalist, state political reporter, city editor, national correspondent, medical reporter and feature writer. He was a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University in 1992/93. He was in the first non-American group of journalists invited to join the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, and is the vice chair of the ICIJ's membership committee. He left print journalism in 2008 and became a senior lecturer in the School of Media, Film and Journalism at Monash University where he rewrote and taught investigative reporting and feature writing units. He founded and was the first executive editor of the student newsroom and publication, https://www.mojonews.com.au. At the same time, he completed a PhD on the growth of nonprofit investigative journalism in the United States. He left Monash University in 2017 and converted his thesis with further research into a book called 'The rise of nonprofit investigative journalism in the United States', which was published by Routledge, (https://www.routledge.com/The-Rise-of-NonProfit-Investigative-Journalism-in-the-United-States/Birnbauer/p/book/9780367582333). He later founded Democracy's Watchdogs, (https://democracyswatchdogs.org), a nonprofit site that features his interviews with current and former top Australian investigative journalists. He is the organisation's CEO and is building the number of interviews and background educational resources on the site. He won numerous awards for his journalism and his academic work.
