Biography
Bill Smoot grew up in Maysville, Kentucky. He attended Purdue University, where he became editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Exponent. The paper's coverage of political and social issues resulted in Smoot being fired by the university President. When students and faculty rose up in protest, Smoot was reinstated, and The Exponent subsequently became a press independent of the university. Smoot went on to Northwestern University, where he received his PhD in philosophy. He spend decades as a teacher at levels ranging from middle school to the university. He has been a writer of fiction, essays, and journalism. His fiction has been published in such journals as Literary Review, Ninth Letter, Crab Orchard Review, Mud Season Review, and Narrative. His nonfiction work has appeared in The Nation, Ohio Review, Western Humanities Review, The Sun, Salon.com, Medium, and Edutopia. He is the author of Conversations with Great Teachers.
