On May 25th, 2020, our guest today, Christian Cooper, set off for what he assumed would be a wonderful day of springtime bird watching in New York City’s Central Park. By that evening, he was being deluged with calls from reporters. And by the next day, his story had flown around the world.
By Bob Kustra| Chicago Tribune Verified The Tribune’s timely series on Illinois’ “Culture of Corruption” reminded me of my first brush with Illinois’ political culture. In 1968, fresh out of graduate school, I was hired by the Republican speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives to help legislators analyze the hundreds of bills introduced every year. I was literally the new kid on the block. A member of the speaker’s staff gave me a tour of the Capitol, and we wound up in the cafeteria with its beautiful marble floor.
