Biography

Brett is a freelance journalist and has been a published writer for the last two decades. Some of his work has appeared in Monocle guides, The Australian Journalism Review, Barcelona Metropolitan and Reportage magazine. He is a staff columnist for Catalonia Today magazine. Brett is also a regular commentator on Spain’s social and cultural life for Australia’s ABC Radio. He fulfilled a similar role on Barcelona’s El Punt Avui TV for Matthew Tree’s ‘Our Finest Hour’ program. In this part of the world, he has been a freelance editor and translator for the last decade. He is the author of the non-fiction books “Slow Travels in Unsung Spain” (published in 2019 by Apocryphile Press in the USA) and “The Remade Parent” (currently out of print.) Brett has also worked as a Chief of Staff and speechwriter/researcher for a government backbencher in Australia, specialising in education and social policies. His tertiary qualifications are a Graduate Diploma of Education in Social Science and English (Secondary Schools) from the University of Canberra, Australia, in 1996. Prior to this he earned a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Politics (with a minor in History) at the Australian National University in 1991. As a teacher in Australia, England, Japan and Spain, Brett has had a long history of close involvement with children and adults from a wide variety of backgrounds. He has drawn from the richness of these experiences for all his nonfiction work. Along with his partner/wife Paula, Brett became a foster parent to a homeless teenager in 1997 and a biological father to a son named Hugo, born in Kyoto, Japan in 2001. Since 2006 they have lived and worked in Catalonia’s Barcelona region.
