This past Shabbat we read Parashat Shlach, which tells the disastrous story of what happened when Jews were afraid to stand up and take possession of their homeland. At the Atlanta synagogue I attended on Shabbat morning, the rabbi spoke about a riot that occurred the previous shabbat, outside a synagogue in Los Angeles. His message was that Jews in our time can’t be frightened into hiding who they are.
