Biography

I am a freelance journalist specializing in architecture, visual art and culture. The publications I have contributed to include The New York Times (five sections), The Christian Science Monitor, Bloomberg, Premiere, Salon, Architectural Record, Metropolis, Dwell, Atlantic Cities, Sunset, The Oregonian, Portland Monthly and several others. I also write and edit the Portland Architecture blog. Among those I have interviewed and profiled are architects Frank Gehry, Herzog & De Meuron, and Cesar Pelli; film directors David Lynch, Gus Van Sant, Danny Boyle, Wim Wenders, Eli Roth, Todd Haynes, Stephen Frears and Sofia Coppola; actors Forest Whitaker, Charlotte Rampling and Michael Palin; athletes Scottie Pippen, Dan Fouts, and Reggie Bush; elected officials Earl Blumenauer, Vera Katz, Sam Adams and Ted Kulongoski; and novelists James Ellroy and Jon Raymond. My first book, "Tales From the Oregon Ducks Sideline," a history of my favorite sports team, was released in 2007 and republished in an updated version in 2011. A second book, "The University of Oregon Football Vault," was released in 2008. My still photographs have been exhibited in a solo at the American Institute of Architects in 2003 (hailed by an Oregonian reviewer for the "beautiful images") and published in Dwell, Metropolis, The Oregonian and Portland Monthly, among others. My experimental films have screened at the Portland International Film Festival, the Northwest Filmmakers Festival (winning three Judge's Awards) as well as venues in Denver, Seattle, San Francisco, London and Berlin. Solo shows have been held in 2007 at the Portland Art Museum, 2010 at Grand Detour in Portland, and in 2011 at the Architecture + Design Festival in Portland.
