Biography

A biologist by training, I work at the crossroads of medical research, public policy, culture and accountability journalism. My reporting over recent years has exposed and explored the off-label sedation of jail inmates with dangerous and addictive drug cocktails, lax state regulation of the health insurance industry, rural ambulance response times following EMS staff cuts, and repeated occupational safety violations in the months leading up to a deadly oil refinery explosion. Lately, I have been exploring health care in Native American communities and implementation of the Affordable Care Act, for New Mexico in Depth. I serve on the board of directors of the Rio Grande Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ-NM) and its Freedom of Information Committee.
