I am a heart and lung transplant surgeon, former U. S. Senate Majority Leader, and chairman of the Executive Council of the health service investment firm Cressey & Company. I founded and serve as chairman of Hope Through Healing Hands, a global health organization which focuses on maternal and child health; NashvilleHealth, a community collaborative dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all Nashvillians; and SCORE, a collaborative K12 education reform organization that has helped propel Tennessee to prominence as a reform state. I am also an adjunct professor of Cardiac Surgery at Vanderbilt University, and currently serve on the boards of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and the Nature Conservancy. I am a senior fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center and co-chair the Health Affairs Council on Health Care Spending and Value.
