Biography

As a general assignment photojournalist, I apply high-quality video mechanics to daily news assignments, and consistently use storytelling techniques. My specialty is capturing the moments in daily life that demonstrate heart. This philosophy provides a reason for viewers to care about a subject. I believe it is critical to cultivate a culture of storytelling in a production workplace. It is in this environment that a deeper connection is made between the storyteller and the viewer. Storytelling adds depth and meaning to the product, which translates to the target community as an interconnectedness that provides value to daily life. By implementing this philosophy, I was honored as one of five finalists for the 2016 National Press Photographers Association Ernie Crisp Photographer of the Year, the highest award given to a working television photojournalist. I have a passion of sharing stories from rural Alaska. In the fall of 2015 I collaborated with anchor Emily Carlson to share Kivalina’s experiences with climate change, sanitation efforts and relocation. The in-depth story aired on Frontiers: with Rhonda McBride and a three-part series aired on KTVA news. This is one of more than two dozen trips I’ve made to communities across the state, ranging from covering the Iditarod, to covering 2011’s major winter storm in Unalakleet, to covering the 2009 Yukon River flood in Eagle, to spending weeks in Juneau covering the state legislature.
