Biography
I'm an investigative reporter for The Marshall Project based in the South. Before that, I was part of the kickass investigations team at The Dallas Morning News. I'm a co-founder of The Frontier in Tulsa, and a former creative director and staff writer there. I'm a Boulder native who grew up in Louisiana and Texas and rolled across the plains like a tumbleweed for a while. Some things I write about: Murder, sex, death, prison, corruption, heartbreak. I've twice had the honor of being Great Plains Awards Writer of the Year. In 2015, I was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in local reporting, along with several other national awards, for writing about flaws in Oklahoma's execution process. While working in Texas, I won the Gerald Loeb award for investigating a gas company's record of deadly explosions, as well as awards for an investigation into what happens to children when their moms are arrested and reporting that uncovered the death of a handcuffed man at the hands of Dallas Police officers.
