Reynolds Foundation Business Journalism Fellow for the national News21 project "Back Home." Served five years in the U.S. Marine Corps. Studied Russian at the Defense Language Institute, earning top honors. Worked in intelligence, administration and project management consulting/contracting in the defense industry before returning to Illinois to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), majoring in both Russian Language and Literature and Rhetoric (Creative Writing). Co-founded Illini Veterans, a Student Veterans of America chapter in Urbana, Ill., and served as its media liaison and spokesman. Reported for the independent student newspaper The Daily Illini. Earned a master's degree from The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. Investigated the charities that have benefited most from America's support of veterans and military families in the years since 9/11 as part of the "Back Home" project. The resulting story, with Andrew Knochel, earned a Best in Business award from the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing in 2013.
