This year’s election – featuring only Tribal Council races – has a total of 31 candidates from a pool of 33 who originally filed for office in February. Districts up for grabs include 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 15, along with one of the two at-large positions.
By Chad Hunter Verified| Cherokee Phoenix Verified TAHLEQUAH – Oral arguments were heard by the Cherokee Nation’s highest court regarding the denial of David Walkingstick as a candidate for Tribal Council, but no decision was immediately rendered. Walkingstick filed his appeal after the CN Election Commission deemed him ineligible to run for the District 2 seat in the June 7 General Election. At a Feb. 24 hearing, the EC decided that “based on not verifying residence within District 2,” Walkingstick was ineligible to run for office.
