The new museum is a project spearheaded by Ohio History Connection, along with its partners the Northwest Territory Museum Society and the Washington County Public Library. It replaces the original Ohio River Museum, which was founded in 1941 in the basement of the Campus Martius Museum before moving to its own building in 1973. It closed in 2022.
