Staffing levels and hospital mortality in England: a national panel study using routinely collected data

Continuous variables were described as mean and SD or median and IQR, depending on the distribution of each variable. Categorical variables were described as frequencies and proportions. Annual mortality rates were calculated by dividing the number of observed deaths by the number of patient spells, across all hospital trusts each year.
