His journey in academia has seen him contribute to research, teaching, and learning at institutions such as Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nigeria, the University of Cape Town, and Cornerstone Institute in South Africa. His expertise is backed by a PhD in Media Studies from the University of Cape Town, and he further honed his esteem indicator as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Humanities in Africa, funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. With a career spanning over a decade, Dr. Uzuegbunam has made significant contributions to the fields of digital media, youth and media, popular culture, political and health communication, and misinformation. His insights and perspectives have also found their way into mainstream media and critical blogs through his op-eds and essays. Currently, he is delving into the world of emerging AI technologies, pushing the boundaries of knowledge in this area in the African context. He serves on the editorial board of African Journalism Studies, Annals of the International Communication Association, and the Journal of Media Literacy Education. Dr. Uzuegbunam’s impact extends beyond academia. He was instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s first-ever National Artificial Intelligence Policy as part of the NITDA Volunteer Expert Group. His expertise is recognized internationally, with affiliations such as the International Panel for the Information Environment in Switzerland. In 2023, his exceptional work was recognized when he was selected as a Carnegie/ASA fellow and subsequently received the Esteemed Fellowship Recognition Award by Carnegie. He is also a co-PI for a Mellon Foundation-funded project on “Digitality, Sociality, and Youth in Makana Municipality”, at Rhodes University. His quest for knowledge and adventure has seen him traveling the globe as a visiting scholar at universities such as Oxford University, the University of Cape Town, Strathmore University, the University of Groningen, and Xiamen University. When he is not engaged in academic pursuits, he preaches on social media platforms (@talkmasculinity) about a cause near and dear to his heart: dismantling harmful manifestations of masculinity and assisting in the formation of a healthy masculinity in Africa.
