Biography

Chinh Doan is living the American dream. She was born in Vietnam and is fluent in Vietnamese. At the age of 4, she and her father, a former South Vietnamese officer and prisoner of war for nearly 10 years, received refugee status, allowing them to move to the United States. Her mother had to stay behind in Vietnam due to paperwork complications. When Chinh and her father arrived in Oklahoma City, they did not know any English, but she quickly learned the language with the help of local news. “One of my father’s first American jobs was working as a janitor at The Oklahoman,” Chinh says. “He would bring home scraps of newspapers. I would read them and watch the news every night with my father. My love of journalism grew out of my efforts to learn English." In 2012, Chinh’s biggest dream came true: She successfully sponsored her mother to America, and their family was finally reunited after 18 years of living apart. Before calling Omaha home in August of 2013, Chinh reported in Central Texas, where she fell in love with the community’s kindness and enjoyed covering military matters from Fort Hood, the largest active-duty armored post in the United States. Some of her fondest journalism memories include producing and directing a documentary about WWII fighter pilots, reporting live from the Academy Awards in Hollywood and interviewing Elizabeth Smart about her childhood abduction. Chinh studied journalism, Spanish and international studies at the University of Oklahoma and graduated as the "Outstanding Senior" of the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, in which she represented her college by giving a speech at convocation. In college, she had several internships at news stations in Oklahoma City, NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder and the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, plus fellowships at Today and CBS News. Chinh has received awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, National Broadcasting Society, Hearst Journalism Awards Program, Broadcast Education Association and the Associated Press. Chinh enjoys being involved in our community and was honored in the 84th class of the Omaha Jaycees’ “Ten Outstanding Young Omahans.” She is a member of the Junior League of Omaha, Omaha Tri Delta Alumnae, Young Catholic Professionals (YCP) Omaha, Greater Omaha Young Professionals, Vietnamese Friendship Association of Omaha, Family and Friends of Inmates and the Asian American Journalists Association. She participates in the Omaha Press Club Show and Omaha Fashion Week every year. Chinh has graduated from Citizens Police Academy programs in Nebraska, Texas and Oklahoma. Her favorite activities include volunteering, trying new foods, reading, photography and spending time with family and friends. Her passions also include traveling. She has returned to Vietnam seven times to visit family, studied abroad in England and Peru and visited France and Wales. Chinh’s most recent trip included a pilgrimage to World Youth Day in Kraków, Poland and Rome, Italy. She would love to hear from you! E-mail her at CTDoan@Hearst.com.
