We witnessed it when many of our members helped their neighbors navigate a contentious and critical U.S. election season; publishers provided comprehensive election guides, hosted events with local candidates and elected officials, facilitated voter registration, and more.

LION Publishers is a nonprofit professional association founded in 2012 to support independent local news publishers in the U.S. and Canada. With over 550 members, LION focuses on enhancing the sustainability of local news businesses by addressing various operational, financial, and journalistic challenges. The organization aims to strengthen the local news industry by helping publishers build financially sustainable businesses that can pay living wages and retain talent. LION offers a range of resources and programs tailored to the needs of news entrepreneurs. These include training and education through workshops and webinars, funding and grants that have significantly increased over the years, and community-building initiatives such as networking events and an annual summit. The organization also introduced a Maturity Model in 2023 to help publishers assess their progress toward sustainability. LION emphasizes equitable access to business tools, particularly for publishers from underrepresented communities, and has seen significant growth in membership and staff since its inception.
