At age 19, his work at a local furniture manufacturer was interrupted when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. For the next few months he worked at the nearby Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, helping to construct U.S. Navy submarines, before enlisting in the U.S. Army on Nov. 24, 1942.
