Biography

I've worked on digital and print platforms and run social media accounts. I've written stories about higher education and the politics that plague it, industries that exploit one of the country's most vulnerable demographics and police officers who skate past judges when accused of sexual crimes. I worked for four years on my student paper, The Daily Tar Heel, covering state politics and how they overlap with higher education. I spent my time as an assistant editor of that paper sitting in legislative meetings and writing about national politicians who visited the state. I also spent a semester on the politics desk of the News and Observer in Raleigh, where I helped with the 2014 elections coverage by going to debates, campaign events and official watch parties. At the News and Observer, I regularly contributed to the popular state politics blog "Under the Dome." During my last year at school, I challenged myself by delving into investigative reporting. I joined the investigative team of my student paper, The Daily Tar Heel. I exposed the school's unmanageable dining hall debt by digging into documents obtained via FOIA, analyzed unequal discipline policies at the local school district and talked to former prisoners about the exploitative prison work system. Since joining that team, I have written for the Southern Investigative Reporting Foundation, and am currently diving into piles of SEC documents for a data-driven project at the Democrat-Gazette. I have been trained as a digital-first journalist. I have experience shooting and editing video, crafting SEO headlines, managing social media and writing in alternate formats.
