The Emancipator

The Emancipator is a digital magazine and online newspaper dedicated to racial justice and equity. Co-founded by Ibram X. Kendi and Bina Venkataraman in April 2022, it operates under Kendi’s Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University. The publication draws inspiration from 19th-century abolitionist newspapers and aims to continue that legacy by fostering discussions on race and envisioning a future of equity for all Americans. The Emancipator focuses on solutions-oriented journalism, producing in-depth articles and commentaries that challenge systemic racism. It engages its audience through innovative digital content, including videos and social media, as well as community-centered events that promote dialogue and action on racial inequity. The publication is led by co-editors-in-chief Deborah D. Douglas and Amber Payne, who also serves as the publisher.
