  • Quantitative and qualitative sex difference in habenula-induced inhibition of midbrain dopamine neurons in the rat

By P. León, Dana Bell, Robert L. Meisel, Ross A. McDevitt| Frontiers@ 1. IntroductionPhasic changes in the firing rate of midbrain dopamine (DA) neurons follow the presentation of motivationally salient stimuli, leading to transient changes in neurotransmitter release that help optimize action selection (Schultz, 2010). Acute aversive events in general inhibit DA neuronal firing (Ungless et al., 2004), a neurophysiological outcome that can be replicated by activation of the lateral habenula (LHb) (Ji and Shepard, 2007).
