Local Democratic Reporter, Kent Online

Canterbury, Kent County

Biography

I'm a Local Democracy Reporter with the Kent Messenger Group/KentOnline via the BBC's Local Democracy Reporting Service. In this position I cover the work of lower tier (city, district, borough) local authorities throughout Kent, as well as broader issues of local politics and democracy. I graduated with a BA in Politics and an MA in Multimedia Journalism, both from the University of Kent, as well as the Gold standard NCTJ Diploma in Journalism. I started writing in my own time during my second year of my undergraduate degree at university, and have had my work published in a variety of outlets. I served as a sub-editor for the Opinion section of the University of Kent's student newspaper InQuire in the 2020-2021 academic year, after which I was elected to the position of Website Opinion Editor, and served in that role for the 2021-2022 academic year. In these positions I gained a wealth of experience in both writing and editing comment, analysis and opinion writing. Whilst studying I did freelance reporting and feature writing, and regularly wrote opinion and analysis pieces on British politics, political history and political culture. I wrote a monthly opinion column for the blog site Backbench for about a year during my final year of my undergraduate degree.

By Daniel Esson Verified| Kent Live Verified A hotel’s expansion plans are set to be dashed after the bid attracted almost 80 objections – with some describing it as an “eyesore” and “monstrosity”. Proposals for a five-story extension at the Hotel San Clu on Victoria Parade, Ramsgate, were submitted to Thanet District Council (TDC) in June last year, but look set to be refused next week. The Grade II-listed hotel was built in 1883, and its owners applied to TDC last summer for permission to carry out the extensive work.
