Biography

David McCumber is Washington Bureau Chief for the Hearst Corporation’s Newspaper Division. McCumber’s journalistic career spans four decades. He has worked for Hearst in a variety of other roles, including Sunday editor, City Editor and Assistant Managing Editor of the San Francisco Examiner; Managing Editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer; and Editorial Director of Hearst Connecticut Media Group. He has also worked for Scripps-Howard, Pulitzer and the New York Times Co. McCumber is the author of three books of nonfiction and the co-author of another. He wrote "X-Rated: The Mitchell Brothers" (Simon & Schuster, 1992); Playing off the Rail: A Pool Hustler's Journey (Random House, 1995); and "The Cowboy Way: Seasons of a Montana Ranch" (Avon Books, 1999). With investigative reporter Andrew Schneider, he wrote "An Air That Kills: How the Asbestos Poisoning of Libby, Montana, Uncovered a National Scandal" (Putnam, 2004), which was a finalist for a New York Public Library Bernstein Award. He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Special Local Reporting in 1984. He was also founding editor and publisher of Big Sky Journal magazine. McCumber was a Pulitzer Prize juror in 2010 and 2011.
