I concluded that a better alignment of interests could be achieved by having fund managers invest in their own funds; also known as co-investment. Unfortunately, most fund companies don't disclose the investing habits of their managers. And there is no requirement in Canada for them to do so. It's high time our regulators changed that.

  • Why performance fees are a scam

    By David O'Leary| fpcollective.ca@ Performance fees, which have predominantly been associated with the hedge fund world, have become increasingly common in the retail fund industry worldwide. Ostensibly, performance fees benefit investors by aligning the fund manager's interests with their own. This alignment of interests happens, or so the argument goes because it ties a manager's compensation to the fund's performance. At first glance, this argument sounds pretty convincing.
