Journalist and Director, Pacific Media Centre

Biography

Professor David Robie has a passion for the Asia-Pacific region. A journalist for more than 50 years, David has reported on postcolonial coups, indigenous struggles for independence and environmental and developmental issues in the Asia-Pacific. He retired from AUT in December 2020. As founding director of AUT’s Pacific Media Centre (PMC), David worked with postgraduate student journalists to edit Pacific Media Watch - a daily digital archive of dispatches about Pacific journalism and media, ethics and professionalism. The PMC also jointly published the high profile independent Pacific Scoop news website with industry partner, Scoop Media, and Asia Pacific Report, which he now edits independently in partnership with Evening Report: http://asiapacificreport.nz/ David is the founding editor of the Pacific Journalism Review (PJR), the only research journal to investigate media issues in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region. He is also the editor of the Pacific Journalism Monograph series. He has written ten books on the region’s politics and media, including Don’t Spoil My Beautiful Face: Media, Mayhem and Human Rights in the Pacific https://bit.ly/3e5HWlu, Mekim Nius: South Pacific Politics, Media and Education and Eyes of Fire, a book about the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior and the impact of the legacy of nuclear testing on Pacific Islanders. https://authors.org.nz/author/david-robie/ in 2004, he was awarded the first media PhD (in History/Politics) in the Pacific Islands at the University of the South Pacific. The title of his thesis was Journalism education in the South Pacific, 1975-2003 : politics, policy and practice. https://openrepository.aut.ac.nz/handle/10292/4557 He gained his Masters in Journalism at the University of Technology Sydney in 1997. In 2011, he was awarded a Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award and he won a Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies Dean’s Award for research excellence the following year. David has been an Australian Press Council fellow and is on the editorial boards of Asia-Pacific Media Educator, Australian Journalism Review, Fijian Studies, Global Media Journal and Pacific Ecologist. He is also currently the New Zealand representative of the Asian Media, Information and Communication Centre (AMIC).
