He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. (Valda Vera Johnson) and Ralph Lawrence Campbell, Sr. He graduated from Topeka High School and attended the University of Kansas. His parents and two brothers, R.L. Campbell and Max Campbell preceded him in death.
