Debra Chandler Landis is a freelance writer living with her Australian Shepherd/ Chow Chow, Chandler, in the city of St. Louis. Recent months found Landis writing for the Missouri Independent and St, Louis Magazine A native Iowan, Landis was 16 when she began writing a weekly newspaper column about local school happenings in her hometown of Chariton, She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and sociology from Iowa State University and a master’s in journalism from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Her journalism experiences are a mix of in-the-field news and features coverage for print and online newspapers and magazines, as well as journalism education, serving for 23 years as the student publications adviser for news, business and advertising of a weekily student-run newspaper and a semester student run-run magazine at the University of Illinois Springfield. While at UIS, Landis was recognized as an LGBTQ+ Ally, and in 2017, received the UIS Student Senate Award for Outstanding Academic Professional. On the editing front, Landis served as executive editor of College Media Review, receiving from the College Media Association a President’s Citation for her work and was honored with lifelong membership in the College Media Association. Her husband of nearly 37 years, Tim Landis, was the longtime business editor of The State Journal-Register newspaper in Springfield, Illinois. Tim died unexpectedly of a heart attack in January 2018, and his sudden death lent to Landis’ continuing interest in writing about blood pressure, cholesterol, heredity and heart disease risks, and innovations in heart disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Tim and Debra’s adult children, Matt and Kelsey, live with their families, respectively, in Kent, Washington, and St. Louis.
