Biography

For five decades Dennis Dimick has focused his attention and camera on the collision between human aspiration and the planet. He was a picture editor for 35+ years at National Geographic, and for more than a decade as the magazine's environment editor orchestrated major projects on climate change, energy, freshwater, population, and food security. From 2008-2012 he co-organized the Aspen Environment Forum in partnership with the Aspen Institute. Winner of editing awards from Pictures of the Year International and the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ), Dimick is a 25-year faculty member of the Missouri Photo Workshop, and in 2013 received the National Press Photographers Association Sprague Award for service to photojournalism. He served on the SEJ board from 2016-2019. He is co-founder of Eyes on Earth, an educational project to inspire a new generation of environmental photographers. Since 2018 he has mentored science and environmental journalism students at the University of Oregon. He presents illustrated slide show lectures on the Anthropocene. Dimick grew up on a sheep and hay farm in the U.S. state of Oregon, and holds degrees in agriculture and agricultural journalism from Oregon State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
