Biography
I’m the Director of Education for Spiritless and am passionate about no- and low-alcohol cocktails. I ran one of the best bars in the U.S., Columbia Room, named “Best American Cocktail Bar” by the Spirited Awards in 2017. I'm also is the author of Spirits, Sugar, Water, Bitters: How the Cocktail Conquered the World and Mindful Mixology: A Comprehensive Guide to No- And Low-Alcohol Cocktails with 60 Recipes. I've written for a number of publications on spirits, cocktails, and well-being—from the Washington Post to Vox—and been featured in numerous magazines, websites, and news outlets for my work on spirits and cocktails. Besides that, I've served as the Chief Spirits Advisor to the National Archives Foundation, and I'm a Distinguished Fellow at Catholic University’s Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship. In 2020, Drinks International named me one of the Bar World 100, a list of the top beverage figures effecting positive change in the global bar industry. In the past two years, I've turned my attention from serving drinks to serving people, studying mindfulness and positive psychology at Penn LPS with an eye on how I can incorporate it into my life and work. I live in Washington, D.C. with my partner Maria and son.

By Derek Brown| Medium@ Derek Brown·Follow5 min read·--Ah, the holidays. That time of year when we gather around the table, surrounded by relatives ranging from your tech-savvy cousin who’s already amassed a following of 10,000 on Bluesky to your grandmother who still thinks “tweeting” is something birds do. The conversation inevitably turns to social media, and suddenly, you find yourself in the unenviable position of explaining why jumping ship from X to Bluesky might not be the panacea everyone thinks it is.
By Derek Brown, Sean Rameswaram Verified| Substack@ Welcome to The Weekend Pour! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Many of you celebrated the holiday with a few drinks. It’s customary, of course, proving what anthropologist Clifford Geertz once said of cultural practices, “people have reasons.” Why we drink—or don’t drink—connects to who we are, what we value, and the stories we tell ourselves. Drinking is more than what's in the glass; it’s tied to rituals, relationships, and culture.
