Diana Cariboni is Latin America editor of the openDemocracy project Tracking the Backlash (TTB). She started writing for openDemocracy in 2018. She coordinates investigative reporting in Latin America. She was previously co-editor-in-chief of the IPS news agency and led its Latin America desk for more than ten years. Hasta ahora, 177 venezolanos, catalogados como “extranjeros ilegales” fueron trasladados a la base encadenados, para ser deportados a su país unos días después. Otros 17 migrantes llegaron el domingo 23. La decisión de Trump provocó indignación, y con razón. Pero nada de esto es nuevo en Guantánamo.

So far, 177 Venezuelans labelled “illegal aliens” have been transferred to the base in shackles and deported to their country days after. Another 17 migrants were sent to Guantánamo last Sunday. Trump’s decision sparked outrage, and rightly so. But, none of this is anything new in Guantánamo.
