Biography
Diane Covington-Carter is a Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism award winner (2020) and has won many awards for her articles, photography, NPR commentaries and books. Her articles have appeared in the LA Times, Hemispheres, Sierra.com, Reader’s Digest, France Today and many other publications. Her 2018 award-winning memoir, Finding Gilbert, A Promise Fulfilled tells a story that spans seven generations and chronicles how her father's stories of his time in France during World War II influenced and shaped her life. One of the stories concerned Gilbert, a French orphan boy her father took under his wing and tried unsuccessfully to adopt and bring home to America. Fifty years after the war, Covington-Carter set out to find the man who could have become her brother. What happened is a testament to the power of love and kindness and to the way that our dreams can guide us our destinies. Her debut novel, Beautiful Courage, A Young Woman's Journey West, 1852 (2019), was named a finalist for The WILLA Literary Awards, 2020. The award is named in honor of Pulitzer Prize winning author Willa Cather and honors the best in literature, featuring women’s or girls’ stories set in the West that are published each year. Diane holds both American and Australian passports and divides her time between an eight-acre organic apple farm in the foothills of the Sierras and the beaches of Golden Bay New Zealand, when she is not off researching an exciting story in an interesting corner of the world. www.dianecovingtoncarter.com

By Diane Covington-Carter| Napa Valley Register Verified It all started 11 years ago when my two granddaughters, ages 6 and 8, came to stay with me for a week. I called it “Camp Grandma.” I live in the Sierra Foothills on an eight-acre organic apple farm, with rivers and lakes nearby. The Milky Way shines down at night and huge pines and oaks reach into the sky. My granddaughters live in an affluent neighborhood in Southern California with small, manicured yards and no rivers or lakes to be found.
