Biography

Don Hendershot is a naturalist and freelance writer living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina - a far cry from the cotton fields, gumbo mud and dark backwaters of the northeast Louisiana Delta, where he grew up in the tiny (12 people in his HS graduating class) village of Mer Rouge Louisiana. Don became addicted to wild spaces at an early age, through a special place - It was a shack on Horseshoe Lake just outside of Mer Rouge, Louisiana. It was a shotgun sharecropper shanty with, eventually, some rudimentary add-ons. Initially there was no electricity. There was never running water, though a well was drilled at some point and a pump installed. By the time Don was eight you could find him perched on the front end of a 12-foot johnboat, sculling along the shoreline fishing for bass and/or bream. Don's love for the outdoors led to a B.S. in Wildlife Conservation from Louisiana Tech University. When Don arrived in the Blue Ridge, he was able to merge his love for writing and the outdoors. He served as a beat writer plus outdoors/environmental writer for Smoky Mountain News in Waynesville, NC from 1999 to 2004. There, he also created his Naturalist's Corner column, which ran for more than 20 years till the pandemic of 2020. https://smokymountainnews.com/outdoors/itemlist/tag/don%20hendershot https://thenaturalistscorner.com/ Don was also a regular contributor at Smoky Mountain Living Magazine and blogged for Southeast Discovery. https://www.smliv.com/topics/don-hendershot/https://www.southeastdiscovery.com/blog/author/don/ In 2019 he published, along with Smoky Mountain News, A Year from the Naturalist's Corner: Volume 1 - a collection of Naturalist's Corner columns. Don also contracts with the USDA Forest Service (since 2000) to perform bird point surveys across the Nantahala and Pisgah national forests. Awards: 2003 – Western North Carolina Sierra Club Media Award for Environmental Reporting. 2010 – Nominated for Roosevelt-Ashe Society’s Outstanding Journalist in Conservation. 2011 – Winner Roosevelt-Ashe Society’s Outstanding Journalist in conservation Award. 2018 – Bronze Award from International Regional Magazine Association along with graphic artist Travis Bumgardner for Smoky Mountain Living feature “A Perfect Storm or the New Norm” about the devastating 2016 wildfires across Western North Carolina and East Tennessee.
