Smothers was a class of 2003 inductee into the DeKalb County Sports Hall of Fame, but he proved himself a leader beyond athletics, heading the school system and later serving as leader in his hometown. Smothers was elected DeKalb County Schools Superintendent and held the office from 1981-1985.
