This was an absolutely terrific and powerful film about a West Virginia mining community in the 1920s with miners trying to form a union and being bulldozed by the company, and it's really amazing to watch this knowing some of Sayles' other films like Brother from Another Planet and the recently-watched City of Hope, because this is such a different setting and characters.

Losers! :) Pretty cool to have Tsui Hark returning to a genre that he helped master in the '90s, and it's funny seeing this just a few weeks after seeing Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain, a movie he made over 40 years ago, because he's definitely gotten better at making these movies, especially with all the big special effects scenes, though the CG in this is a little wonky still.
