Eileen Markey is an independent journalist specializing in urban policy, social movements, memory, and the role of religion in the public square. Her work has appeared in The New Republic, The Nation, the New York Daily News, The Village Voice, The Daily Beast, City Limits, WNYC New York Public Radio, Commonweal, and elsewhere. She’s been deeply rooted in The Bronx since the 1990s and has also reported from Cambodia, the US-Mexico border, Central America and Ireland. She is an assistant professor in the department of Journalism and Media Studies at Lehman College of the City University of New York, a visiting scholar at the Bronx County Historical Society and the writer in residence at Fordham University's Center on Religion and Culture. She is at work on a history of the Bronx people's movement in the 1970s and 80s.
